ABR / BERA (Auditory Brainstem Response)
ABR, also known as BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry), is an advanced and objective hearing test used to evaluate how the auditory nerve and brainstem respond to sound. This test is especially useful for newborns, infants, and individuals who are unable to actively participate in conventional hearing tests. It helps in detecting hearing loss, auditory nerve disorders, and neurological abnormalities with high accuracy.
During the procedure, small electrodes are placed on the scalp and ears to record electrical activity generated in response to sound stimuli. The patient is required to remain relaxed or asleep, ensuring reliable results. ABR/BERA plays a crucial role in early diagnosis, particularly in infants, where early intervention is essential for proper speech and language development. The results guide audiologists in determining hearing thresholds and planning appropriate treatment or rehabilitation strategies.
