Reflex Decay Test

The Reflex Decay Test is used to assess the ability of the acoustic reflex to sustain its response over a period of time. It helps in identifying potential issues in the auditory nerve pathway, particularly retrocochlear disorders that affect nerve function beyond the inner ear.

During the test, a continuous sound is presented, and the stability of the acoustic reflex is monitored. If the reflex weakens or “decays” rapidly, it may indicate an abnormality in the auditory nerve. This test is often performed in combination with acoustic reflex testing to provide more detailed diagnostic information.

The Reflex Decay Test is an important tool in advanced audiological evaluations, helping clinicians detect underlying neurological conditions that may not be identified through basic hearing tests. Accurate results from this test support timely diagnosis and appropriate medical management.
