Acoustic Reflex

The Acoustic Reflex test evaluates the involuntary contraction of the middle ear muscles in response to loud sounds. This reflex helps protect the inner ear from damage caused by high-intensity noise. By measuring this response, audiologists can assess the integrity of the auditory pathway, including the middle ear, inner ear, and auditory nerve.

During the test, sounds of varying intensity are presented, and the reflex response is recorded using specialized equipment. The presence or absence of this reflex provides important diagnostic information about hearing sensitivity and neural function. It is particularly useful in identifying conditions such as hearing loss, nerve disorders, and certain neurological abnormalities. The test is quick, comfortable, and often performed alongside tympanometry to provide a comprehensive understanding of middle ear and auditory system health.
